Doctor of Optometry
Dr. Maika Teal, is a Doctor of Optometry who supports the practice’s commitment to advanced diagnostics, individualized treatment and patient education.
Dr. Teal is dedicated to helping patients better understand their eye health and treatment options. His approach to care is rooted in compassion, education and open communication, with the goal of ensuring every patient feels seen, heard and empowered throughout their care journey. He believes informed patients lead to healthier communities and better long-term outcomes.
Raised in ʻEwa Beach, Hawaiʻi, Dr. Teal is proud to serve the communities of Oʻahu with the same spirit of care, leadership and aloha that shaped his upbringing. As the oldest of five siblings and the son of pastors, he was raised with strong values of compassion, humility and service, which continue to guide his patient-centered approach today.
Dr. Teal was drawn to Jenkins Eye Care for its warm, family-focused environment and commitment to patient education, values that closely align with his own. He is honored to join a team dedicated to helping patients across Hawaiʻi protect and improve their vision through personalized, results-driven care.
A graduate of St. Francis School, Dr. Teal served as student body president and captain of the football, baseball and paddling teams. These early leadership roles helped spark his lifelong commitment to service and community. His interest in optometry began in high school after a life-changing experience with contact lenses inspired him to pursue a career helping others improve and protect their vision.
Dr. Teal earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon, where he remained connected to his Hawaiian heritage through the Hawaiian Club, performing hula, fire knife dancing and playing ʻukulele at annual luaus. He went on to receive his Doctor of Optometry degree from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California, where he developed a clinical interest in myopia management and retinal disease.
Outside of the clinic, Dr. Teal supports outreach programs at his family church and enjoys staying active at the gym and outdoors through surfing, fishing and embracing the island lifestyle he loves.
