Cataract surgery has long been one of the safest and most common procedures performed in the United States. But even with all the planning in the world, traditional lenses are fixed the moment they are implanted — leaving little room for adjustment if your vision isn’t exactly right afterward. The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) changes that completely.
Available at Jenkins Eye Care as part of our premium IOL options, the Light Adjustable Lens is the first and only FDA-approved intraocular lens that can be customized after cataract surgery. Once the lens is implanted, you have the chance to test your vision in real life. Then, using gentle UV light treatments done right in our office, your surgeon can fine-tune the lens to match your exact needs — whether that’s sharp distance vision for driving, clear reading vision, or something in between.
The numbers back this up. Patients with the Light Adjustable Lens were about twice as likely to achieve 20/20 vision without glasses at six months compared to those with a standard lens. The American Refractive Surgery Council also reports that more than 70% of nearsighted patients achieved 20/20 or better without glasses after LAL surgery, and more than 99% could see 20/40 or better.
The adjustment process is simple and pain-free. Most patients need one to three light treatments, each lasting about 90 seconds in our office.
