Tyrie Jenkins, M.D., Performs First iStent® Surgery in Hawai’i:
New Treatment for Glaucoma in Conjunction with Cataract Surgery
(HONOLULU, HAWAI’I – APRIL 30, 2013) – Yesterday, Tyrie Jenkins, M.D., performed the first iStent® trabecular micro-bypass stent surgery in Hawai’i at Surgical Suites. The treatment reduces eye pressure for patients with both cataracts and glaucoma.
The iStent® has been approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) for use in conjunction with cataract surgery to reduce eye pressure in adult patients with mild to moderate open-angle glaucoma who are being treated with glaucoma medicine.
“The iStent® is an innovative method to treat people affected by both a cataract and glaucoma,” said Jenkins. “It is so small patients are unable to see or feel it. Patients will need less medicine to control eye pressure, and in some cases, may not need prescription eye drops at all.”
iStent® is the smallest medical device approved by the FDA. It is placed in a patient’s eye during cataract surgery. In clinical trials, iStent® has been shown to reduce eye pressure, which is the primary cause of open-angle glaucoma.
Studies show that more than 90 percent of patients do not follow prescribed ocular medication dosing regimens and nearly 50 percent discontinue taking their medication before the six-month mark. This can put patients at risk for permanent vision loss.
Jenkins is a pioneer in the field of laser vision correction. She has introduced groundbreaking technology to the islands by performing the first LASIK procedure in 1997 and LenSx®, the bladeless cataract surgery in Hawai’i. She participated in the national study that led to the FDA’s approval of LASIK.
Nationally recognized for her work, she was named a top-rated physician in her field by her peers (Honolulu Magazine’s Best Doc’s in 2012 and 2013 and Pacific Business News’ Best Doctors Hawaii List, 2010-2012). She was twice named by VISX, a world leader in laser correction technology, as one of the top 100 laser vision correction surgeons in the country. Dr. Jenkins is one of the first few to be trained in the use of iStent®. For more information about Dr. Jenkins, visit www.jenkinseyecare.com.
