iStent® Trabecular Micro Bypass is an FDA approved device for the treatment of mild-to-moderate open angle glaucoma. This device is used in conjunction with cataract surgery to reduce eye pressure for patients who are currently being treated with glaucoma medication. Studies show that more than 90 percent of patients do not follow prescribed ocular medication regimens and nearly 50 percent discontinue taking their medication before the six-month mark which can put patients at risk for permanent vision loss.
iStent® is the smallest medical device ever approved by the FDA. It is placed in your eye during cataract surgery and is so small that you won’t be able to see or feel it after the procedure is over.
Dr. Tyrie Jenkins performed Hawai‘i’s first iStent® procedure on April 29, 2013 at The Surgical Suites in Honolulu.
