Dr. Jenkins Performs Cataract Surgery with Tecnis® Symfony Lens

(HONOLULU, HAWAII, AUGUST 31, 2016) – Yesterday, Tyrie Jenkins, M.D., performed cataract surgery using Tecnis® Symfony Intraocular Lens (IOL), the first extended depth-of-focus IOL.

Approved by the USA Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in July 2016, the Tecnis® Symfony IOL provides continuous vision that allows patients to see clearly at near, intermediate and far distances, minimizing the need for glasses. A toric version of the lens that corrects astigmatism has also been approved.

“Symfony is a new option that we now offer patients who undergo cataract extraction,” said Jenkins. “This lens gives patients, an option for crisp, clear vision at all distances. This is an important addition to our portfolio of lenses.”

The Tecnis® Symfony IOL is approved for use in more than 50 countries around the world. In numerous clinical studies involving more than 2,000 eyes the Tecnis® Symfony lens:

  • Provided seamless day-to-night vision so patients could see objects sharply and clearly at near, intermediate and far distances, as well as points in between.
  • Provided high quality vision by minimizing chromatic aberration (competing wavelengths of light passing through IOLs at different angles resulting in failure to focus) and spherical aberration (vision that is not completely focused because of the shape of the IOL).
  • Demonstrated low incidence of halo and glare, which patients perceived as rings or blurring around lights that may interfere with night driving.

At Jenkins Eye Care, the Tecnis® Symfony, as well as all premium IOLs, is coupled with advanced technologies, including LenSx Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery, ORA Intraoperative Aberrometry and the VERION Image Guided System, which improves the accuracy and safety of surgical outcomes.

Dr. Jenkins is a pioneer in the field of laser vision correction. She introduced groundbreaking technology to the islands by performing the first LASIK procedure in 1997, LenSx laser cataract surgery in 2012, and recently added Contoura Vision, an innovative LASIK vision correction technology, to Jenkins Eye Care. Nationally recognized for her work, Jenkins has been named a top-rated physician in her field by her peers (HONOLULU Magazine’s Top Doctors 2012-2016 and Pacific Business News’ Best Doctors 2010-2016).

Associate ophthalmologist, Dr. Jeffrey Peterson, also performs cataract surgery and uses the advanced technologies and premium IOLs offered at Jenkins Eye Care.
